Friday Sigma work

Yesterday when I was away, everyone worked on their language techniques in their Sigma workbooks.  I see lots of work on alliteration and some work on anecdotes.  Today, let's complete our anecdotes work and then create kahoots on the language techniques we know so far.  Each group needs to come up with new examples of the techniques they choose (include anecdotes, alliteration, metaphors and similes) and then create questions asking the audience to identify which language technique is being used for each example.

Possibly today, and definitely next Friday, we will do each other's quizzes.

The teenage brain

Today we had a guest speaker at school.  Nathan Mikaere-Wallis spoke to all senior students about alcohol and the teenage brain.  Today we started the lesson by writing about his talk - what we each remember and our opinions.

Next step is to organise our thoughts into plus - minus - interesting.

Plus
he taught us not to drink before we are 18 because its more dangerous than after 18
the speed that we drink at makes a difference to how it affects us
faster drinking is more dangerous so binge drinking is bad for us

Minus
that girls mature faster than boys

Interesting

Evaluating texts: vocabulary

We started the lesson by identifying five words each which we didn't understand from the website texts on Aromahana.  Then we wrote them on the board, organising them according to which text each word came from.

These words mostly came from the Grey District Council website.  They included:
ecological
recreational
rehabilitation
restoration
encompassing
amenity
envisaged
beachcombing
estuarine
holographic

Evaluating sources for a specific reading purpose

Learning objective: to evaluate the usefulness of different written texts.
Success criteria:
1. We can identify a purpose for reading.
2. We can read & summarise the main ideas in each text.
3. We can make a decision about which text is most useful and why.

Our purpose: to find out the history of the Aromahana Sanctuary site and to find out what is special about it now.

Next: make a table to record your information.

The Aromahana Sanctuary

Today we will be reading and discussing the work on the Aromahana Sanctuary.

Do now: What do you know about the Aromahana Sanctuary?

Big question: What is history of the Aromahana Sanctuary and what makes it special?

Google "Aromahana" and then read the top four sites which are listed in the google search results.  You can discuss the results in your groups, and decide which sites are the most useful for answering our big question.

The google results will look like the screenshot below:

Language techniques & reading skills

Last week we began our language techniques race.

Today we are looking at the article on the Cobden tiphead toilets.  Please read the article and answer the following questions:
1. When and where was this article first published?
2. Based on where it was first published, who would be most likely to read this article?
3. Write down an example of alliteration in the title.  What is the effect of this technique in this title?
4. Who wrote this article and took the main photograph?  Where did you find this information?
5. How many car parks will there be beside the new toilet block?
6. How much money did the government contribute in total to this project?
7. Who will be able to stay overnight at this new carpark?
8. What did this area used to be thirty years ago?
